Christoph Willibald Gluck Alceste
The music is, of course, stunningly passionate, the singing is quite excellent
in almost every aspect and the acting is superb. Indeed Catherine Naglestad’s
acting of the title role ought to be made compulsory study for anyone
with RADA pretensions. And that is before a word is written about her
voice. She epitomises the despair and anguish that this amazing role offers.
Take her Air “Ah! Malgré moi …”which she delivers
partly lying across those chairs: glorious, smooth sounds, phrasing that
makes you hold your breath, high notes piano which should make the hairs
of your neck tingle, controlled trills and colours in abundance. For the
final verse she moves to a sitting position and demonstrates what sheer
power she controls. This alone would justify the purchase.
Music Web International
In the title role, Catherine Naglestad is a revelation, her physical stillness
and emotional concentration bringing focus to her expressive face and
flawless vocal technique and aligning her performance perfectly with the
classical austerity of the work and of this production. Singing seated,
curled across a row of chairs or sprawled on the floor, she sculpts every
musical phrase with care and luxurious tone, and her breath control is
superb.

Catherine Naglestad's Alcina is a complex figure - regal, headstrong and
even somewhat sympathetic. The bright, impressive upper range of her voice,
topped by an effortless high D, serves her well in the cadenzas. She consistently
improves in the course of the performance, in the end comparing quite
favourably with the better-known stars on other CD recordings of the opera,
including Arleen Auger (on EMI) and Rene‘ Fleming (on Erato).
