The Melissa, Catherine Naglestad. This is surely the way to do Handel.
She was mercurial, exciting, perverse, sexy, full of a sense of dance
(especially in the gigue "Io godo, scherzo e rido"). Her first
aria "Ah, spietato", was a knockout, with all the tricks - very
soft tone, shimmying rhythmic freedom - of the emotional manipulator.
Opera
Melissa's showstopping number at the end of act two was grandiose virtuosic
in Catherine Naglestad's performance...
